On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, Lyman Orchards will be hosting its annual Paint the Pumpkin Pink event in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Guests will have the opportunity to paint, glitter and bejewel their pumpkin to benefit the Comprehensive Breast Center at Middlesex Hospital.
Small pumpkins are $10 and their larger counterparts are $20. Fifty percent of proceeds will be donated to the center.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and one in eight women will develop the ailment in their lifetime. Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in America. However, if detected early, breast cancer has a 98 percent five-year survival rate.
New England residents can help support those affected by Breast Cancer by participating in the Paint the Pumpkin Pink festivities. Furthermore, experts from the Comprehensive Breast Center will be present to provide support and encourage attendees to spread the word about the importance of regular breast exams.
Once they’ve completed their pumpkin painting, guests are encouraged to partake in the variety of different activities available on the farm including pony rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, kettle corn and more. Additionally, Pick Your Own apples and pumpkins are in full swing. Apple varieties include Macoun, McIntosh, Cortland, Empire, Jonamac, Spencer, Rome, Ida Red, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Liberty, and Crispin/Mutsu (subject to change).
Ambitious explorers can tackle the historic 4-acre Corn Maze, which celebrates the 275th Anniversary of the Lyman Family farming in Middlefield. The maze is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and $1 from every admission is donated to the American Cancer Society.
The Apple Barrel market will also be open until 7pm so guests can enjoy a warm cup of cider alongside a hot apple crisp or Lyman’s award-winning Hi-Top Apple Pie.
